EDITION 002 - EX VOTO
EX VOTO is a limited-edition capsule of wearables that explores the concept of divinity through the collision of devotional materials with printed matter rooted in religious criticism and satire. The researched materials span family archives, informal and domestic repositories, online sources, and second-hand channels, bringing into direct relation contrasting attitudes towards belief and faith.

In October 2025, XEROXED took part in the Publishing course led by Saul Marcadent within the BA in Fashion Communication at the Università Iuav di Venezia. Throughout the course, we worked closely with the students to develop a series of garments conceived as publishing media, combining editorial research, garment layout, and print production.
EX VOTO is a limited-edition capsule of wearables developed during the course. It explores the concept of divinity through the collision of devotional materials with printed matter rooted in religious criticism and satire. The researched materials span family archives, informal and domestic repositories, online sources, and second-hand channels. They include, on one hand, ephemera such as church leaflets and devotional cards (santini), liturgical guides, and religious pamphlets, and, on the other hand, independent and self-published printed matter such as flyers, radical zines, and satirical newspapers and magazines.

By creatively re-working these materials, EX VOTO explores contrasting attitudes towards belief, focusing on the tension between public expressions of religious devotion and anti-clerical positions rooted in atheism. This tension emerges through the confrontation between opposing perspectives on faith, which are brought into direct relation within the project.
Through cutting, pasting, and recomposition, the original meaning of these materials is partially disrupted and reconfigured. Fragmentation, obscuration, and isolation of statements reduce their clarity, introducing ambiguity and, at times, intensifying them through incompleteness. This alteration does not erase the original context, but destabilises it, allowing multiple interpretations to coexist.

The content of the garments was developed by photocopying and physically manipulating the selected materials on the scanner bed, where paper fragments were cut, pasted, and reassembled into compositions that retain the rawness of their origin, preserving imperfections such as grain and printing flaws. Particular attention was given to maintaining the tactile and visual qualities of the original sources, translated onto fabric via silkscreen printing.
The layout was directly assembled on the garment, mixing different analogue techniques in a continuous conversation between paper and textiles. In this process, the garment becomes a space in which to recontextualise the published material, putting it back into circulation through a new medium. Through the XEROXED garments, fragments of past narratives are reintroduced into contemporary space in a new visual and graphic form, no longer as fixed messages but as open, shifting fields of meaning. What was once confined to the page becomes mobile, public, and embodied.
